| Ato
has what is undoubtedly his best season ever.
He opens
his season in April with 9.86, which at the time is the 3rd fastest 100m time
ever run.
He then rattles off 9 more "sub-tens", seven of
them with legal wind, for a total of 10, 8 with legal
wind-assistance.
At season's end, his 1998 SEASON 100m average is under 10
seconds
flat, a first for ANY sprinter.
He wins the Goodwill Games 200m, and sets a new meet record in
winning the 100m Commonwealth Title in mid-September.
At year's end he has run more times under 9.90 for 100m than anyone, ever,
with 5.
Ato
also leads the world at 200m, with a 19.88, and in so doing is
the first person to lead the world in both sprint events since the
Santa Monica Track Club's Mike
Marsh did it in 1992.
