After
leading the world indoors at 60m AND 200m, Ato opens his season with
a personal best 9.89 for 100m in Modesto, beginning an unparalleled streak of
opening his seasons with near WR times.
A groin cramp hinders Ato to a 5th place finish in the 100m dash
final at the World Championships, but Ato returns 4 days later to win his first World Title in the 200
meter dash.
It's his country's first track gold medal in 21
years. Needless to say Trinidad and Tobago parties like it's
1999 (two years early).
Ato continues to improve, and by season's end his personal-best times are 9.87 and
19.77. He's now become history's best one-day sprint doubler
(100/200m) ever.
In other words, only one other person has run sub-10 for
100m and sub-20 for 200m in the same day - Calvin Smith. He did it
once in his career. Ato's done it three times already.
